Opening song
Ashley Chambliss – A Little More Of You We begin the episode with a track that Skins Chief Exec Bossman Bryan Elsley found on iTunes. It’s by an American Singer-Songwriter called Ashley Chambliss and has been quite a hit in America having been used on MTV’s The Hills as well as a film called Anywhere USA. She’s someone you should definitely check out if you’re into singers like Aimee Mann and Beth Orton.
Esser – Satisfied Esser releases on the awesome Transgressive Records, which is also home to Skins’ good friends Foals.
Freddie's place
Snoop Dogg – Drop It Like It’s Hot Freddie and Katie are listening to this classic Neptunes production as Effy walks in on them. I’ve mentioned in previous posts my love for Pharrell Williams’ work and this is another fine, fine example. Portishead – Machine GunCharles Martin (the episode’s director) culls this dark track from Portishead’s latest album as we begin to sense that it’s the episode when Skins goes all dark. Surely it’s not too long till we bring in Darts groupie Fat Segal for a bit of score.
Cook goes to Effy's
Susan Cadogan – Nice and Easy As Cook walks to Effy’s house, we play some classic Reggae from Susan Cadogan. This track was written by the legendary Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, who Jamie Brittain (Skins creator) and Matt Simpson AKA Fat Segal and myself may see perform live this weekend.
Driving to Gobbler's End
Lacrosse – You Can’t Say No Forever Lacrosse are yet another awesome twee, indie pop act from Sweden who take influence from classic 80s indie acts who released on labels like Sarah Records and Rough Trade.
Fat Segal Tiv KnifeOh no – can you sense where we’re going with this one? We bring in our good friend Fat Segal to do the first of some dark, forboding score. The general template for this is taken from Frank Tetaz’s score for Aussie horror film Wolf Creek.
Fat Segal Carl GustavI am going to take this opportunity to say that in the very, very, very near future Fat Segal is releasing his debut EP on iTunes! The artwork is being done by Tal Rosner who does the awesome opening sequence to Skins. Fat Segal has told me that his press team are organising a press conference to announce the tracklist very soon.
Setting up camp
Travelling Band – Only WaitingThe Travelling Band are an upcoming act from Manchester who take influence from people like Gram Parsons and Bob Dylan. Their big track ‘Only Waiting’ plays as they’re entering the woods.
The Fall – Spoilt Victorian ChildSkins Editor Dan ‘The Butcher’ Gethic, who was born and raised in Manchester, wanted to show his Mancunian heritage in this his last episode of Skins series 3. I suggested that we play a track from one of the greatest bands of all time – The Fall (playing in the background). When Dan then read that Mark E. Smith is from Prestwich (just like him) a tear almost came to his eye.
The shrooms kick in
Gang Gang Dance feat. Tinchy Stryder – PrincesTinchy Stryder guests on this awesome track by GGD, which is taken from their Warp debut Saint Dymphna. Like with all GGD albums it’s a grower and you should definitely give it a few listens before realising it’s a masterpiece and one of the albums of last year. It’s just a shame we won’t be able to see them perform live for a while.
Holding hands by the fire
High Places – Banana Slugs High Places, who you may have missed when they were last in Skins as you got all excited over the Naomi/Emily storyline in episode six, get their second play in Skins. It’s once again taken from their awesome debut EP which came out on the legendary Chicago based record label Thrill Jockey.
Beginning of part 3
A Guy Called Gerald – Voodoo Rage Part three begins with some more of Manchester’s musical heritage to please The Butcher (playing on the cd player). This is a classic production from A Guy Called Gerald, who is one of the few Drum N Bass acts that I can actually stand.Fat Segal Different GravyFat Segal provides some more dark, disturbing score as things take a turn for the worse.
Effy loses control
Joy Division – She’s Lost ControlJoy Division appear for the first ever time in Skins in a disconcertingly appropriate moment as things get out of control for Effy. I really hope I don’t need to explain who they are. Fat Segal - DarrenLittle note here – this is Fat Segal’s favourite piece that he composed for the episode. Perhaps it’ll be on his EP – as soon as he’s announced the press conference I’ll let you know if it is.Fat Segal - ByrdThis is the final track of Fat Segal’s hefty and crucial contribution to the show. If you yourself like the idea of making a crucial contribution to something important click on the link
Effy and Freddie get it on
Bon Iver – WoodsThis is taken from Bon Iver’s latest EP ‘Blood Bank’ which is out on the awesome label Jagjaguwar. With this EP Bon Iver is developing his sound and hinting at much larger things for the future.Alela Diane – The RifleAlela Diane first came to prominence (for most people anyway) when Rough Trade voted her album ‘The Pirate’s Gospel’ as their album of the year in 2006. She has just released her second album ‘To Be Still’ and it is a continuation of her previous work – a must for fans of Karen Dalton and Cat Power.
Effy breaks down
Florence and the Machine – Dog Days Are OverCharles Martin does a little homage to legendary Skins director Adam Smith as Effy sits in her room looking anxious. Whereas in series one episode 8 we used Grizzly Bear’s ‘Knife’ here we use the much written about Florence and the Machine.
Final song
Maps – When You LeaveTickling away when Effy and Cook are in the car are Shoegaze revivalists Maps. It was written into the script that the episode should end with a power ballad. Toby and I campaigned furiously for it to be Boston’s More Than Feeling, a track so good that it even makes Scrubs enjoyable (have a look online to see what we're on about). Unfortunately our idea was cruelly ignored but this is more than adequate an alternative, I guess.
